The Application of TVS in Power Systems and Signal Circuits

 

TVS  diode is also called transient voltage suppressor. Its appearance is the same as that of ordinary diode, but it can absorb up to several kilowatts of surge power. Its main feature is that under reverse application conditions, when it is subjected to a large high-energy pulse, its working impedance immediately drops to a very low conduction value, thus allowing large current to pass through, while clamping the voltage at a predetermined level, its response time is only 10-12 milliseconds, Therefore, it can effectively protect precision components in electronic circuits.

 

a. Application of TVS  in power systems:

 

Overvoltage caused by operational errors such as lightning overvoltage waves and load switches can easily invade the interior of electrical and electronic equipment through power supply lines, causing failure and malfunction of electrical and electronic equipment, and even causing sexual damage to the equipment, resulting in serious economic losses. By installing surge absorption devices MOV and TVS on the power line, two-stage protection is implemented, and common mode and differential mode protection are provided for L and N lines. The specific approach is to install MOVs as level protection at the front end of the line to discharge most of the lightning current, and install high-power TVS as the second level SPD protection at the end of the line (equipment front end) to further weaken the overvoltage amplitude value and reduce the grid voltage to within the E/I safe withstand voltage range.

 

b. Application of TVS  in signal lines:

 

TVS  can be used not only for surge protection of power supply system, but also for surge protection of signal lines. Gas discharge DIODE GDT and TVS  DIODE are combined to form a signal Surge protector, which is characterized by fast response, small leakage current, almost no loss of signal, and can provide safe and reliable protection for high-speed network lines.
