Can fast recovery diodes and rectifier diodes be used interchangeably?

The internal structure of the fast recovery diode is different from that of ordinary diodes, and it adds base region I in the middle of P-type and N-type silicon materials to form P-I-N silicon wafers. Due to the thin base area, the reverse recovery charge is small, which not only greatly reduces the TRR value, but also reduces the transient forward voltage drop, so that the diodee can withstand high reverse operating voltages. A rectifier diode is a semiconductor device that converts alternating current energy into direct current energy. It usually contains a PN junction with both positive and negative terminals. Rectifier diodes are generally planar silicon diodes, which are used in various power supply rectifier circuits.

 What is the difference between a fast recovery diode and a rectifier diode, and it is analyzed from the following three aspects. Fast recovery diode: Due to the thin base area of the fast recovery diode, the reverse recovery charge is very small, which not only greatly reduces the TRR value, but also reduces the transient forward voltage drop, so that the diode can withstand high reverse working voltage. Rectifier diode: The rectifier diode uses the unidirectional conductivity of the PN junction to turn alternating current into pulsating direct current. The leakage current of rectifier diodes is large, and most of them are diodes packaged with surface contact materials. Different structure, fast recovery diode: The internal structure of the fast recovery diode is different from that of ordinary diodes, it is in the middle of P-type and N-type silicon materials to add base region I to form P-I-N silicon wafers. Rectifier diode: Usually it contains a PN junction with two terminals, a positive and a negative. The most important characteristic of diodes is their unidirectional conductivity. In a circuit, current can only flow in from the positive pole of the diode and out from the negative pole. Therefore, to summarize, there are several principles that can be considered for rectifier diode substitution:

(1) The rectifier diode with a large maximum average rectifier current can be replaced by a diode with a small rectifier current, but not the other way around;

(2) The rectifier diode with high reverse working voltage can replace the rectifier diode with low reverse voltage, but not the other way around;

(3) The rectifier diode with high working frequency can replace the rectifier diode with low working frequency, and the reverse is not possible.

In addition, the price of fast recovery diodes is much more expensive than that of rectifier diodes, and the higher the withstand voltage, the more expensive they are, so fast recovery diodes are generally not used instead. Of course, if you only have a fast recovery diode at hand and do not have a general rectifier diodee, you can also use it instead as long as the withstand voltage is sufficient.
