How to Select a Schottky Diode? A Comprehensive Guide on VF Drop, Current, and Voltage Rating

The Schottky diode is the most commonly used power diode in switching power supplies, adapters, fast charging, and lithium battery protection circuits. Compared to conventional rectifier diodes, its primary advantages are lower forward voltage drop, faster switching speed, and reduced power loss. Many engineers encounter issues such as severe heating, breakdown, or low efficiency during component selection, which essentially stem from insufficient parameter margins or incorrect scenario matching.

1. Three Parameters for Schottky Core Selection

1. Forward voltage drop VF: In low voltage and high current scenarios, prioritize low voltage drop models (around 0.3V) to significantly reduce temperature rise and improve power conversion efficiency, commonly seen in low voltage rectified outputs such as 5V and 12V.

2. Rated Forward Current IF: It is recommended to reserve more than twice the actual operating current. For power supply equipment operating continuously at full load, the current specifications must be increased to avoid failure caused by prolonged high-temperature aging.

3. Reverse voltage rating (VRRM): Select based on the peak voltage at the rear end, with a safety margin of 30%–50% to prevent reverse breakdown caused by surge voltage.  diode

II. Common Applicable Scenarios

Mobile phone charger, USB adapter, car power supply, DC-DC module, lithium battery charge-discharge protection, low-voltage freewheeling circuit.

3. Selection Pitfalls to Avoid

The reverse leakage current of Schottky diodes is relatively high, making them unsuitable for high-voltage, high-resistance, and low-current sampling circuits, as they can easily cause leakage errors. In high-voltage scenarios, fast recovery diodes are recommended as replacements.

IV. Reference to Common Best-Selling Models

The SS34, SS54, SR240, SR360, SR5100, and other surface-mount and through-hole Schottky series are compatible with the vast majority of civilian and industrial low-voltage power supply solutions.diode
