Resistance strain gauges are typically used as part of a Wheatstone bridge to improve measurement accuracy and sensitivity. The Wheatstone bridge is a circuit used to accurately measure changes in resistance. It consists of four resistors arranged in a diamond shape. These four resistors can contain one or more strain gauges, while the remaining resistors are known fixed resistors or additional strain gauges.diode
In the simplest configuration of a single-chip strain gauge bridge, the strain gauge is placed on one arm of the bridge, while the other three arms are composed of fixed resistors. When no strain occurs, the bridge is balanced and the voltage in the middle is zero. When the strain gauge deforms, its resistance changes causing the bridge to become unbalanced, and the voltage in the middle is no longer zero. By measuring this voltage change, the deformation of the strain gauge can be calculated, thereby obtaining the strain of the measured object.diode
To improve measurement accuracy, two strain gauges can be used on the diagonal of the bridge, one sensing tension and the other sensing compression. This configuration is called a full bridge configuration, which can double the output signal of the bridge and reduce errors caused by temperature changes.diode
